Stay tuned, watch out! The 10,000-Step Challenge begins

Can you take 10,000 steps a day? I believe in you. That’s why I challenge you.

It was a few years ago that the last official stay-on-track challenge. Never mind. The current situation is a wonderful opportunity to work together – as a community – towards a common goal:

We walk 10,000 steps a day together. For 7 days.

Why?

First, they are a wonderful target for more exercise in everyday life. Second, it may well be that you just take the momentum with you and then keep going.

Why should you take 10,000 steps a day?

Our fellow citizens usually only manage a third, some even only a quarter. The fact is:

Those who exercise more in everyday life live healthier, leaner and are fitter.

You also burn more calories practically in passing without sweating.

Why exactly 10,000 steps? Well, that’s the WHO recommendation. 1 It’s also a nice round number.

Even if science is still arguing whether 7,500 steps are not enough – or whether it shouldn’t be 15,000 steps. 2 3

A typical office worker manages 1,500 steps a day. In the home office there are probably fewer.

Anyone who takes 10,000 steps a day for a week burns 2,000-3,500 calories in this way.

So let’s make it our damn mission to do just that. Together, as a big keep-up team.

This is how you take part in the 10,000-step challenge

Here’s the deal.

Movement in everyday life is the keyword. And taking 10,000 steps a day can seem really challenging at first.

But it is definitely doable! Especially if you are well organized.

What is the goal?

It’s about moving more outside of training:

  • 10,000 steps.
  • Every day.
  • For 7 days.

Take a total of 70,000 steps.

When does it start?

We start on Friday, May 1st, 2020 .

The challenge ends on Thursday, May 7th, 2020.

How do you track your steps?

I use an Apple Watch.

But anything that automatically records steps works.

For example:

So you don’t have to buy an extra device to count your steps. Every reasonably up-to-date smartphone can do that.

SmartWatches, activity trackers and training watches are more convenient because you always wear them on your body. You have to take your mobile phone with you.

This is how we motivate each other!

If you want, report on your progress in your posts. Tell us what you are proud of. What was difficult for you. This will inspire the other keepers.

Ask questions. What moves you. Whether and why you just missed 10,000 for a day. That it’s your turn now. Whatever you can think of.

I’ll post my results from the day before in my story and give you a few practical tips that can help you stick with it. Let yourself be surprised.
